Takuya Hashimoto, Keita Imamura, Yuya Nagayoshi and Takuma Sato were said to have still been dressed in national team clothing as they headed into Jakarta following Thursday’s 82-71 win over Qatar.

Japan chef de mission Yasuhiro Yamashita said the four “spent the night in a hotel with women” and the players then apologised for the incident at a news conference.

“I am very sorry for our thoughtless behaviour,” said Nagayoshi. “I’m terribly sorry.”

Hashimoto added: “I was aware that I was doing things I should not do. On the way [to the hotel], I was looking at my clothes and felt it was improper. However, I was careless.”

“I also felt that I was doing improper things,” said Imamura. “As a player who is representative of Japan and the Japanese flag, I should be a role model in my private life but I wasn’t. I was being thoughtless.”
